This monument of German history is just a stone's throw from our hotel. You can still see many former GDR "Iron Curtain" border barriers on the spacious museum premises.
There are places that make history: this border checkpoint site is one of them. Between 1973 and 1989, about 6 million travellers crossed the inner German border here. The Eichsfeld Borderland Museum opened its doors in 1995 and was completely redesigned in 2010. Today, an exhibition spread over approx. 1.000 sqm gives visitors a chance to learn about history and the consequences of German division for the people but also for nature. The museum thus becomes a monument and a memorial with a message of caution for future generations. Lectures are also held here regularly.
Our tip: along the 6km "borderland route ("Grenzlandweg"), you can visit many of the old facilities and gain an overview at 24 info-points. An electronic audio guide is available.
